Narita Airport Guide to Making an Early-Morning Flight
Reliability: Medium · Last checked: 2026-07-28
What to weigh up when deciding whether the first train or bus will get you there in time or whether to stay the night before, and what you can do at the airport early in the morning.
Check This First
Even on the first train from central Tokyo, you generally reach Narita Airport after 6 a.m. If you check in 2 hours before departure, the first train probably will not get you there in time for a flight leaving before about 7:30.
Your options
- Stay the night before — Nine Hours Narita Airport, connected directly to Terminal 2, is the option inside the airport. For hotels around the airport, check whether they run a free shuttle.
- Late-night bus — You can reach the airport before dawn on late-night and early-morning buses such as the Airport Bus Tokyo-Narita (at a higher fare).
- Stay at the airport — Spend the night inside a terminal. It is free, but comfort is limited.
Early Morning at the Airport
- Many places in the Terminal 3 food court open at 5 a.m. (Botejyu Yatai, Sendai Tanya Rikyu, Hakata Ittenmon, Miyatake Sanuki Udon, Freshness Burger, Ringer Hut and others). Matsuya is open 24 hours.
- Check-in counter opening times differ by airline (for LCCs, generally 2 to 2.5 hours before departure).
Points to Note
- First-train times and journey times change with the season and timetable revisions. Always check the latest timetable.
