Reliability: Medium · Last checked: 2026-08-01

Borrowing a wheelchair, how to ask for assistance, the electric carts and self-driving wheelchairs after passport control, and quiet rooms where you can calm down.

In short

Narita Airport lends wheelchairs and helps people get around the airport, free of charge. Ask at the Information Counter in each terminal, or call 0476-34-8000 (24 hours, every day of the year). Assistance can also be booked in advance.

After passport control, Terminals 1 and 2 have electric carts and self-driving wheelchairs (WHILL), so you can cover long distances seated. Terminal 3 has neither of these services.

Who this is for

  • People who have difficulty walking, wheelchair users and the people traveling with them
  • People taking elderly family members to or from the airport
  • People who find crowds or noise hard and are looking for somewhere calm

Borrowing a Wheelchair

  • Borrow one free of charge at an Information Counter, found at various places in the terminals
  • You can return it at any nearby Information Counter
  • Arriving passengers can use one from the area after immigration procedures
  • For services provided by airlines, contact your airline directly

How to Ask for Assistance

  • When you arrive at the airport to depart, ask JR or Keisei station staff, the nearest Information Counter, or use an intercom. Airport staff will take you to your airline's check-in counter
  • After check-in, assistance is provided by your airline. Contact your airline
  • If you know the date and time, you can book in advance by phone: 0476-34-8000 (24 hours, every day of the year)

Electric Carts (After Passport Control)

They run after passport control in Terminals 1 and 2 for people who need help, such as people with disabilities, elderly people and people with children.

  • Terminal 1 departures: 9:00–19:00
  • Terminal 2 departures: 9:00–20:00
  • The electric carts in the arrival areas and the North Wing departure area are suspended

When departing, ask at a nearby Information Counter or speak to the driver directly. The service is suspended at some times depending on the flight schedule.

Self-Driving Wheelchairs (WHILL)

Free to use after passport control in Terminals 1 and 2. Choose your destination and it drives there by itself; after you get off, it returns to its station (WHILL station) automatically. No booking is needed — go straight to a station.

  • Hours: 7:30–21:30 in both Terminal 1 and Terminal 2
  • Stations (Terminal 1): South Wing 3F departure concourse; North Wing 3F, near Gate 21 in Satellite 2
  • Stations (Terminal 2): Main Building 2F connecting passage; Main Building 3F near Gate 61; Main Building 3F near Gate 71
  • In Terminal 2, you cannot travel between the Main Building side and the connecting passage side
  • The number of wheelchairs is limited, so one may not be available

Riding restrictions: people weighing 136 kg or more and people 140 cm tall or less cannot ride. Eating or drinking while riding, and riding with two or more people (including carrying a child in a baby carrier), are not allowed.

Calm-Down / Cool-Down Rooms

Dark, quiet rooms where people who find sound, light or being looked at hard can calm down. They are intended for people with developmental, intellectual or mental disabilities and their families. There are 7 across all terminals.

  1. Terminal 1, South Wing, 2F (domestic, after security)
  2. Terminal 1, Central Building, 2F (international, after passport control)
  3. Terminal 2, Main Building, 2F (domestic, after security)
  4. Terminal 2, Main Building, 2F (international, after passport control)
  5. Terminal 3, Main Building, 2F (before security)
  6. Terminal 3, Main Building, 3F (domestic, after security)
  7. Terminal 3, Main Building, 3F (international, after passport control)

There are also first-aid rooms, but they are locked. To use one, call the number posted on the door and staff will come to unlock it. If you need to see a doctor, use the clinic in the airport.

Other Facilities

  • Every terminal has wheelchair-accessible restrooms and accessible restrooms with ostomy facilities
  • For people who are anxious about communicating, there are help straps, communication support boards for the security checkpoints, enquiry sheets, a booklet to prepare for your visit to the airport and more
  • With "Smartphone Intercom", you can call for help from your own smartphone

Notes

  • There are only a limited number of wheelchairs and electric carts. You may have to wait when it is busy, so arrive with plenty of time
  • The electric carts and self-driving wheelchairs are services in the area after passport control. You cannot use them to get around before check-in
  • Services and hours may change. Check the official website before you go
