Wheelchair loans, the scope of assistance the airport provides, self-driving wheelchairs that run 24 hours, and the facilities in accessible restrooms.
In short
Kansai Airport lends wheelchairs and strollers at the information counters in Terminals 1 and 2. In the international gate area there are self-driving wheelchairs (WHILL) that run 24 hours, so you can cover long distances seated even for a late-night or early-morning flight.
The key point is that the airport's assistance covers getting around inside the airport. The official policy states that help inside restrooms, with changing clothes or with eating is to be provided by the person accompanying you. If you need such help, plan for someone to travel with you as well.
Who this is for
- People who have difficulty walking, wheelchair users and the people traveling with them
- People taking elderly family members to or from the airport
- People who find crowds or noise hard and are looking for somewhere calm
Borrowing a Wheelchair or Stroller
- Available at each information counter in Terminals 1 and 2 (except in the international departure area after passport control)
- Information counters are on 1F, 2F and 4F of Terminal 1 and in Terminal 2
- The information counter staff are called "Kanku Ai Pal", and the official information says they are gradually obtaining Care-Fit Server (service assistant) qualifications
- When no staff are present, a dedicated phone is available
What Assistance the Airport Provides
Kansai Airport provides support for getting around inside the airport. However, the official website states that the following help is to be provided by the person accompanying you:
- Help inside restrooms (transferring, toileting), etc.
- Help with changing clothes
- Help with eating
- Assistance for long periods beyond a reasonable extent
Check-in and in-flight support are handled by your airline, so contacting your airline in advance as well makes arrangements easier.
Self-Driving Wheelchairs (WHILL)
They are provided in the domestic and international gate areas of Terminal 1, so that people who are worried about walking long distances can get around the gate areas comfortably.
- Domestic: 2 units, from 5:30 until the last flight departs, free
- International: 2 units, 24 hours, free
- One person per trip
- Stations are near domestic Gate 41, near the domestic security checkpoint, and in the international gate area
Calm-Down/Cool-Down Spaces
Spaces are provided where you can calm down. They are on Terminal 1, 2F: after security (international) and in the domestic gate area.
Accessible Restrooms
- Restrooms with ostomate facilities are at various places in Terminal 1 and Aeroplaza, and there are several inside the international and domestic gate areas
- Adult changing tables (large beds) are available in Terminals 1 and 2
- As an emergency call system, accessible restrooms have an intercom for talking directly with information staff
- In the accessible restrooms in the domestic gate area, the luggage hooks and door buttons are placed at a height wheelchair users can easily reach
- Accessible restrooms with a nursing room nearby have no baby seat, so they can be used as spacious private rooms
- Some stalls in the men's and women's restrooms are wide enough for a manual wheelchair, and there is space under the washbasins
Other Facilities
- Braille guide boards in restrooms and accessible elevators
- A relief area for assistance dogs
- The airport information center (telephone center) is available 24 hours for questions about flights, facilities and access
